Biography
Benson Curruthers served with the British Army in India in the years following the Indian Mutiny. Joining the newly-formed Military Police, he was instrumental in bringing many fugitives to justice, progressing rapidly through the ranks.
Several years ago, he brought a local drugs kingpin to ground in a cramped network of sewers under Calcutta. As his men explored the dank passages, surprising and capturing numerous small groups of gang members, Curruthers realised that individual soldiers had begun to disappear without making a sound. Organising his dwindling forces into a defensive position, he was confronted with a number of slimy, inhuman looking figures. As the men frantically fired, reloaded and fired again, the creatures tore into them, apparently immune to bullets. Curruthers ordered fixed bayonets and the surviving soldiers rallied, eventually slaughtering them all. The carnage was appalling and the stench was worse. Abandoning his mission, Curruthers emerged back into the sunlight with less than a quarter of his unit alive. The drugs network had been destroyed, but its master had got away.
Demoralized by what he had experienced, Curruthers resigned his commission and returned to London, hoping to forget the horrors while working as a detective for Scotland Yard. Unfortunately, he found himself confronting the unexplained again and again, while remaining ill-equipped, physically and mentally, for the task. After yet another such failure, he was approached by the Ministry, who offered him support and another way of battling his inner demons.
