Biography

Ben­son Cur­ruth­ers served with the Brit­ish Army in India in the years fol­low­ing the Indi­an Mutiny. Join­ing the newly-formed Mil­it­ary Police, he was instru­ment­al in bring­ing many fugit­ives to justice, pro­gress­ing rap­idly through the ranks.

Sev­er­al years ago, he brought a loc­al drugs king­pin to ground in a cramped net­work of sew­ers under Cal­cutta. As his men explored the dank pas­sages, sur­pris­ing and cap­tur­ing numer­ous small groups of gang mem­bers, Cur­ruth­ers real­ised that indi­vidu­al sol­diers had begun to dis­ap­pear without mak­ing a sound. Organ­ising his dwind­ling forces into a defens­ive pos­i­tion, he was con­fron­ted with a num­ber of slimy, inhu­man look­ing fig­ures. As the men frantic­ally fired, reloaded and fired again, the creatures tore into them, appar­ently immune to bul­lets. Cur­ruth­ers ordered fixed bay­on­ets and the sur­viv­ing sol­diers ral­lied, even­tu­ally slaughter­ing them all. The carnage was appalling and the stench was worse. Abandon­ing his mis­sion, Cur­ruth­ers emerged back into the sun­light with less than a quarter of his unit alive. The drugs net­work had been des­troyed, but its mas­ter had got away.

Demor­al­ized by what he had exper­i­enced, Cur­ruth­ers resigned his com­mis­sion and returned to Lon­don, hop­ing to for­get the hor­rors while work­ing as a detect­ive for Scot­land Yard. Unfor­tu­nately, he found him­self con­front­ing the unex­plained again and again, while remain­ing ill-equipped, phys­ic­ally and men­tally, for the task. After yet anoth­er such fail­ure, he was approached by the Min­istry, who offered him sup­port and anoth­er way of bat­tling his inner demons.
