Biography

Rod­ney Marsh was a pro­fes­sion­al burg­lar, wanted for a large num­ber of petty thefts by Scot­land Yard. Sev­er­al years ago, he ‘lib­er­ated’ an Indi­an arti­fact from the Brit­ish Museum, later dis­cov­er­ing that, while he car­ried it on his per­son, he had the abil­ity to change his size and shape into that of a rat for a short peri­od of time. Using this abil­ity, his career became a lot easi­er, as he could get into places that no oth­er human would fit.

The Min­istry took an interest after a num­ber of suc­cess­ful high-pro­file ‘impossible’ rob­ber­ies; sus­pect­ing magic­al influ­ence, they iden­ti­fied the cul­prit and began to keep a close eye on him. Real­iz­ing that he could be of use to them, they set up a ‘honey trap’, a rob­bery that they knew he could not res­ist, and from which he could not escape, even in his shape-shif­ted form. Upon his cap­ture, he was giv­en a choice: a life of hard labour in pris­on, or work for the Ministry.

He chose the latter.
