Starfleet usually produces a lighter, more-adaptable counterpart to each of its flagship classes, and the Galaxy is no exception. The Nebula-class was designed, using most of the same components, primarily to perform extended research. It possesses a similar volume to its big sister, but despite devoting more space to laboratory capacity, equipment and cargo storage, their crews reside in relative luxury. An interchangeable pod, mounted above and behind the primary hull, can be swapped out at a suitable facility for alternate designs, customised for specific missions. Nebulas are generally found around the Federation’s frontiers on long-duration survey, research and patrol missions.
